THE AVIATION HALL OF FAME TURNS 50!

11/29/2021

The Garden State has a deep-rooted history of looking to the skies for more than just the next rainstorm. Aviation has a rich history in New Jersey, as prolific leaders such as Charles Lindburg and Patrick Riley called New Jersey home.

These men were also instrumental in creating the Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey, and next year, 2022, will mark the museum’s 50th anniversary.
Picture

A Brief History of the Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey

Fifty years ago, a gentleman named Patrick Riley founded the museum and later penned the book From the Balloon to the Moon: New Jersey's Amazing Aviation History. Riley and many of his associates were also directly involved in flying in some way. When they began to think about or research some of New Jersey's rich history, it occurred to them that there should be some form of a museum to honor the remarkable achievements of those who either lived or worked in the state. That is how the museum was born.

The museum has always been on airport property in Teterboro. The airport itself is noteworthy in aviation history in New Jersey because it was built in 1910 and is still operational today. Therefore, it made sense for the Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey to build its legacy on this property.

Throughout the first four years, the museum was in one of the historic towers on the other side of the industrial avenue. Then, in 1976, they moved to their current location.

In 1976 the original building was constructed. While there have been additions since then, the museum has been at its current location for 46 years.

The Roots

The Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey have maintained three main goals since its inception:

  1. Provide all visitors with an educational experience about New Jersey's involvement in attaining groundbreaking aviation and space achievements.
  2. Seniors and children alike can appreciate the immense contribution that New Jersey's people and establishments have made.
  3. As numerous schools make this a valuable learning opportunity for their students, the museum introduces youngsters to careers in aerospace, engineering, research, aviation, management, production, and other ancillary businesses in the aerospace industry.

They are proud to be carrying on the legacy that their forefathers started in 1972.

The Museum’s Early YearsThe early plaques of some of the early founders, such as Charles Lindbergh, were the first ever-present exhibits. As a result, the inaugural exhibits consisted heavily of Hall of Fame plaques. Of course, now the museum honors over 180 people in the Hall of Fame room.
Picture

At Present

Now, so many exhibits consist of images, old manuals, and documentation from certain companies.

However, there are plenty of aviation exhibits that fill a room and the yard surrounding the building. Some of these exhibits include:

  • M*A*S*H Bell 47 helicopter
  • Lockheed Bushmaster plane
  • U.S. Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter
  • And more!

“Exhibits are continually changing, and we must keep up,” Ralph Villecca, the museum’s Executive Director said, “As everyone knows, you must keep the museum fresh for your visitors. So, the museum tries to rearrange things or add to current exhibits.”

For example, in the Great Room, the museum features a general aviation trainer, a flight simulator developed by Finger Care, a New Jersey-based company. Then, there is Jersey Soaring, a glider manufacturer based in Blairstown Airport. They donated a fully functional glider, which the museum is now restoring.

Plus, the museum is also in the process of restoring a Korean War vehicle with a communication shack on top, slated to open as an exhibit in the spring. There were also radios inside that were used to communicate with enemy locations during the Korean War.

Unique Aspects of the MuseumIt is difficult to tell because each exhibit is so distinctive in its own right and in terms of what it adds. So, it all boils down to an individual's interests:

Some of the exhibits are engines designed to help visitors learn more about B-29 bombers, including the X-1 and the X-15, which had engines produced by different companies.

Concerning aircraft: The Aviation Museum of New Jersey has flight simulators that get utilized in pilot training.

Only four of these remain in the world, one of which is an inertial reference unit. These guidance systems directed the Apollo manned missions to ensure that they got placed in the correct lunar trajectory on their way to the moon. Two are at the Smithsonian one resides at Honeywell Aerospace, and the other one has found a home at the Museum.

Many engineers are fascinated with engines when they come in.

However, many visitors are intrigued that a glider, or a proficient glider pilot, can stay aloft for six or eight hours flying a glider with no engine in the plane.

People are astounded by the depth and breadth of New Jersey's contributions to aviation. Whether your interest resides in engineering with some of the world's most prestigious engineering firms or the famous pilots, this Museum has something for everybody.

Of all the prolific faces from the thirteen astronauts from New Jersey that have visited the Museum, the most renowned is Buzz Aldrin of Montclair, the second man to walk on the moon.

On the architectural side, Newark Airport in Newark, New Jersey, was the busiest airport in the world throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Plus, Newark Airport was the first airport in the world to have a paved runway. In 1935, Amelia Earhart dedicated the Newark Airport passenger terminal to the first passenger terminal at a major airport.

Why Should You Visit the Museum? You must come to visit if you are looking for a place to spend an intriguing afternoon, even if you only have a passing interest in space, engineering, or aviation, whether commercial or military.
It is truly a one-of-a-kind, rich learning experience in New Jersey.

The Museum is also really interested in learning and teaching. Villecca says one of the best parts of working at the museum is seeing the expressions on children's faces when they come to visit. And because children are both motivated and ambitious, they enjoy teaching a new generation of young men and women, boys and girls, who aspire to be engineers, pilots, or astronauts.

Everyone at the museum understands the importance of cultivating young minds, and one great way to do that is to expose them to the real world and its history. That is why everyone associated with the museum is keen on keeping the information, exhibits, and possibilities fresh and relevant; both honoring aviation history and encouraging future innovators.

Mystical World Conjures Positivity throughout Bergen County for Over 28 Years

Spiritualism is a very personal aspect of one's life for many people. Nevertheless, the exploration of spiritualism can be a journey that can be better, easier, and more fulfilling with knowledgeable allies by your side.

When you visit Mystical World, whether you are a devout believer or just opening your mind to the possibilities, you are sure to be intrigued by their offerings. From crystals to meditation, tarot readings to angel cards, going to Mystical World is like entering a portal to a metaphysical dimension.

Enter Mystical WorldOn Ridge Road in Lyndhurst, Mystical World is a Bergen County store that started making the journey of spiritualization and self-discovery easier for their neighbors for twenty-eight years.

Mystical World started on Stuyvesant Avenue with Owner Sara Spano and Manager Yvette McGuire. Both women hold a Bachelor of Metaphysical Science degree, are ordained Metaphysical Ministers and are associate members of the International Metaphysical Ministry.

Spano is also a Certified Hypnocounselor and Past Life Specialist and has been a spiritual healer and counselor for over 28 years.
McGuire is a Licensed Spiritual Healer, Certified Vibrational Sound Master Teacher, and Shamanist.

Together, the women have created an oasis for spiritual, metaphysical, and holistic healing discovery.

After four years at the Stuyvesant Avenue store, Spano and McGuire moved to their current location in Lyndhurst. This location has expanded the store from a metaphysical bookstore to offering readings, classes, workshops, and several healing modalities.

Picture
Currently, Mystical World offers an elite, talented staff, of 10 additional employees, with specialties such as:

  • Psychic Mediums
  • Tarot Readers
  • Psychic Astrologer
  • Certified Spiritual Consultant
  • Master Reiki

These gifts, educational, and instructional assets thrive under one roof, cultivating a place of peace, acceptance, and understanding.

Find a Session to Fit Your NeedsUnfortunately, like many neighboring businesses, the pandemic has caused Mystical World to reduce the workshops and classes, mostly due to class size restrictions. Currently, each class size has a limitation of up to 12 people.

"We're doing everything we can to keep our, our customers and students as healthy and safe as possible," McGuire said, explaining that everyone who attends classes needs to register by calling the store (201) 896-3999.

However, if you are not comfortable with even an in-person, one-on-one reading or healing session, the staff at Mystical World are happy to help. Several readers are available for phone or Zoom interviews.

All you need to do is call the store and set up an appointment with your preferred reader.

According to McGuire, a unique aspect of the shop is that while the pandemic has many people exceptionally stressed out, Mystical World offers meditations, classes, and healing sessions that help them relax.

Also, since Spano and McGuire are ordained metaphysical ministers, they can offer traditional counseling and a vast array of spiritual counseling to help their neighbors and clients through difficult times.

Spreading Positivity Throughout their CommunityRight now, the goal for Mystical World is to help people look at life a little more positively, despite what's happening around them or the world. When a person comes into the shop, the staff will often converse with them, which leads them to express how they're feeling or discuss an issue currently happening in their lives. This conversation will often lead to the person receiving guidance on the spot through the vast network of trained instructors and metaphysical experts.

However, McGuire wants people to know that their advice is only suction. They never tell people what to do. Instead, they are there to advise and perhaps, offer a different perspective.

If more than advice is needed, the experts at Mystical World can also offer a remedy such as meditation or even learning to meditate on their own to help them with that stress relief whenever they need it.

According to McGuire, of the most surprising things about working at Mystical World is that most of their customers are pretty open to spirituality and metaphysics. This openness is especially encouraging when it comes to the younger generation.

"It's nice to see young people coming in and curious about their spiritual paths and being able to, to guide them and then to see them making real positive changes in their lives," McGuire said. "That's always been very rewarding, knowing that we helped in our own small way, maybe someone dealing with an issue or a problem, or maybe just someone who was just having a little difficulty with stress or anxiety and being able to help guide them in a more positive way."

The fortune that Mystic World has brought to Bergen County is undeniable, judging by the loyalty of its customer base. Everyone at Mystical World feels exceptionally grateful to have such a very loyal customer base.

"We truly appreciate all of them," McGuire said, "And even though we were closed for a few months, they never forgot us. They've come back, and they continue to support us."

Special Events Happening at Mystical WorldDuring the holidays, it can be difficult to find the perfect gift. Yet, when you visit Mystical World, you can always find something unique.

However, if you're looking for an exceptional find, make sure to stop in during one of the store's pop-up sales.

The first of the pop-up holiday sales will take place on November 27th, Small Business Saturday. There will be a crystal vendor on-location for this sale, including a Crystal and Stone show and sale. This sale is sure to offer premier insight to getting your hands on highly sought-after crystals, even during the holiday season.

The next pop-up sale will be on December 4th, where there will be three craft vendors at the shop selling mystical handcrafted wares.

Of course, throughout the year, there are many more events, classes, and sessions ramping up as Mystical World, and the rest of Bergen County's businesses recoup and recover from the closures and pandemic-related restrictions.

For more information about any of Mystical World's offerings, visit their website, Facebook, give them a call, or stop in.

LOCAL SHOWCASE: MAGICAL APOTHECARY & HOMESCHOOLING

11/18/2021

I am not the only one my age that feels this way: I hated virtual school with a passion. So, here I am, a 7th grade homeschooler who is not only following an academic curriculum, but also learning to run a small business. After a year and a half of a chaotic learning environment, I decided on a completely new path; an unusual path. Luckily, my parents were able to adjust their days to accommodate this and thus began our adventure.
Picture
Homeschooling is a type of learning that may be a bit uncommon, but provides, in my opinion, a better format and environment for the learning experience.  Homeschooling opens up infinite possibilities, especially in New Jersey, where you don’t have to follow any real guidelines, though we are loosely following the curriculum of my former private school. Parents and students can really explore whatever skills they feel are necessary to grow, at any speed that suits them, as they are not restricted by a rigid lesson plan or set schedule.  Instead of sitting at a desk for 7 hours straight, lessons go by in a fraction of the time. This leaves more opportunity for greater development and mentally feels much better. I can go through a lesson anywhere, at any time of the day, while moving or dancing or tossing a ball. Some days we do an Italian lesson on the couch after dinner or a Latin lesson while cuddling with our foster kittens. Learning occurs at every step of the way.

Even though it's flexible, homeschool does still take up a good portion of the day, which makes it difficult for my mom to run her small business, Deep Breath In, making and selling soaps, deodorant, salves, balms; all sorts of natural body products (deepbreathin.com). Apologies for the shameless plug. Originally she thought she would have to pause her business but instead we incorporated it into my lessons: introduction to free market capitalism and economics is one of the more crucial things a child should be learning if we are preparing for an adult life. In order to have the full experience, I am involved in all parts of the business from product development, to sourcing materials, to manufacturing, marketing, web design, bookkeeping and everything in between. And I get to keep 50% of the profits!
Picture
I’ve experienced public school, I’ve experienced private school and I can say I fully recommend homeschooling as a better option. I feel as if traditional schooling has become distorted over time and kids aren't learning what they need to succeed. School’s main purpose is to prepare you for life, and I personally think homeschooling does a better job.  Of course, it may not work for everyone, but over the past 3 months, I have explored so many different topics, learned so much and I have even helped my peers with their homework! I'm not sure if I'll return to traditional school next year yet. It will certainly be difficult to adjust if I do.

Veronica has always had a passion for all things creative. Since she was very young she always had a passion for drawing, writing, painting, sculpture and eventually all things cosmetics, body art, hair and beauty. Veronica graduated from Berkeley College with a degree in Fashion Marketing in 2001. She worked as a makeup artist for Estee Lauder where she trained at their corporate office in NYC and then managed their makeup counter and provided makeup services for weddings, photo shoots and events for several years. She officially became a certified makeup artist in 2005 by one of the leading bridal makeup experts in the makeup industry, Ms. Irina Feygin of IMpeccable Image, Inc. Veronica managed retail chains for over 17 years until she started her family and decided to focus on incorporating her love for painting and body art, with her passion for makeup artistry-which is how Creative Faces By V was born! Creative Faces By V was started in 2015 with nothing more than a few palettes and a cardboard menu and a dream - to painting for the NJ Devils at the Prudential Center in 2019!

Veronica has worked so incredibly hard to create an amazing experience for her clients no matter what the occasion. She has painted thousands of children, taught acrylic painting on canvas for the after school program at her local elementary school, participated in teaching for the local arts and crafts summer rec program, hosted a face painting course in the local library and has been hired for hundreds of events and parties over the years. She published her first fictional children's book about face painting in 2019 (Kate's First Face Paint-A Dat At The Fair), was published in several magazines for her accomplishments in makeup and face painting; including Brides New Jersey for pro makeup tips and Q Magazine for pro face painting.

Veronica is constantly continuing education in order to keep her clients safe and knowledge current. In the past year that Covid forced entertainment businesses to be closed, Veronica used that time wisely and acquired six certifications including new updated infection control guidelines, art psychology coaching and more. This is in addition to her existing training and decades of experience. She also took that time to focus on building her social media online presence, while keeping her painting skills sharp, and has thousands of followers on both the Instagram and Tiktok platforms (@creativefaces_glamlocks), along with her Facebook page where there's countless 5 star reviews.

Veronica decided to simultaneously pursue her passion for natural hair styling during the past year and graduated Parisian Beauty Academy in October 2021 with her Natural Hair Styling License in order to open her own Luxury Hair Extension Salon
Picture
She has 2 decades of hair extension experience and has been doing hair extensions for over 3 years (when not working painting parties), and launched Glam Locks this past fall upon completing certifications in several hair extension methods
