Tony Robbins has changed the lives of many people. Sunil Chillar was one of them. In his early twenties, Sunil attended a three-day event run by Tony and his team. On the first night, Tony asked the audience if they would like to try and walk on fire, barefoot. It was a real challenge and Sunil decided to go for it. This act, which he completed successfully, gave him extreme confidence and changed his life. His thought was, if I can walk on fire, I can do anything. He had been a Vice President at Paine Webber, with a large staff. But after this happened, he left the financial world completely and decided to just see where this new sense of freedom and excitement would take him. This was an excellent decision and he has never looked back. Sunil has been in the Real Estate world for twenty-three years. For the past seven years, he has been the broker owner of Exit Realty in Jersey City, where he has agents working for him, selling New Jersey Real Estate. He himself buys and renovates and sells multi-unit buildings all over the country. These are large buildings, comprising 100-300 units. Residential real estate today is not easy, There is much less inventory, many buyers, and too many bidding wars. Sunil says agents work much harder today to make less money. For this reason, he has found other streams of revenue. The State of New Jersey now has a new law regarding lead paint. Every rental building, residential and public, must have a lead inspection. The inspector has to decide if the building is safe enough or if an owner must de-lead the building. Sunil, being the entrepreneur that he is, became a lead inspector and opened a new company to do this work, The company is All Lead NJ and wow, it is thriving.. Right now he is in the process of hiring and training others who will be able to do what he does in this business. Sunil went big and courted local townships and is now "THE" inspector for certain Jersey towns. Sunil has three successful grown children. They are scattered throughout the US. His two-year-old grandson.gives him great joy. He is a "blast" he says, with a huge smile on his face. When Sunil's kids were little they helped him on job sites, he had them iron and do the dishes. He never wanted them to believe that someone else was going to do it for them. They were never spoiled. He and his wife work closely together in all his enterprises. For Sunil, there is no downside to this. She travels with him and is all around a good partner. This is one very busy man, but he does find time for exercise. Right now he is into kickboxing and loves it. He does know how important this is, to help maintain a healthy life. Sunil is a prime example of how far a belief in oneself, hard work, and perseverance can take you. It is for sure true that everything in life depends on timing. An incident, an accident, good or bad, in a blink of an eye a life, an entire population can be changed. These are no exceptions. Covid hit and the world turned upside down, causing divorce, death, a new closeness, or the opposite - hatred, lots of losses and for some, gains. Either we roll with the unexpected or we fall. Evans Babitt and his wonderful wife Lali were ready for a new beginning. They had acquired a space for their business with room for a once upon a time neighbor who had become a friend, each with businesses that complemented each other. Much work needed to be done to the space and they were ready to go. New floors, new fixtures, and it would be perfect, They were excited but for timing. It was March of 2020, the start of no one going anywhere. It was two years before either space was complete. Evans meeting Lali - that is an example of perfect timing. Lali had had a small tax business out of her house in Queens. Evans was in the financial world selling insurance and mutual funds. He was not yet doing taxes. It was 2008. His office was in a hispanic area and Evans did not speak Spanish. He called someone he knew who spoke Spanish and she told him that, at that moment, she could not help him because her brother in law was getting married. She invited him to tag along to the party. Through some contacts at the wedding, he met Lali's sister, who thought that Evans felt familiar and that maybe he should meet her sister. Evans and Lali, whose full name is Eulalia, spoke on the phone. Here she was, the perfect woman. She was single, he was single and wanting not to be. She wanted a business partner and she wanted a home. She was pretty, spoke Spanish and was smart. Cutting the story short, Evans, on a whim went to a wedding and six months later, through a bunch of little coincidences, met his mate. Timing! Evan and Lali together began Medatax in 2009, on Bergenline Avenue in North Bergen. They eventually moved to the office in Cliffside Park, on Anderson Avenue. They do payroll and sales taxes, help open and close businesses and of course personal income taxes. Their business radius seems to be throughout the US although they are very committed to working within their local community. They are very hard workers, working diligently to educate their clients, teaching them how to handle their finances and how to save. They help them get the proper licenses for their particular niche, like for example, a nail salon. or a home improvement business. They can register a business and help a new business have a catchy and/or an appropriate name. They invest a lot of care and hand holding into each fledgeling business owner. These clients are ambitious entrepreneurs. Some are new to the US and have never learned what it takes to run a successful business while building wealth for their future. Lali and Evans seem to be somewhat saint-like because of the work they are doing. Of course, they also earn their living, but there's a lot of satisfaction knowing they are changing the lives of many of their clients. Entering their office, there is a large sitting area where they hope to eventually run workshops to help the community and reinforce what they are trying to teach their clients on a one to one basis. The Babitts have a lovely philosophy, to put a little vacation into everyday life. This, even if it is just taking their young granddaughter to the park, cooking a wonderful meal together, or enjoying a great movie, it is all about attitude and how we look at things. In his spare time Evans enjoys the study of meteorology. He has a love of great music, especially Beethoven and Wagner. Eclectic, interesting, smart and kind describes this unusual couple. by Alan Wallach Most of us remember significant dates in our lives, birthdays, anniversaries and so on. Some dates are universal like December 7th, Pearl Harbor or June 6th, D-Day. A date very significant for me is June 5th which is my fathers birthday. Why is that so important for me, you may ask? That was the day in 1978 that I stopped smoking for good. I started smoking when I was sixteen because it was cool and it evolved into a life threatening and life distorting habit. I had stopped several times but I always returned to the habit. So why my father's birthday? My father was a tobacco salesman I thought it a great irony to have him give me a gift on that day. One of the main impetuses was my son Peter who harassed me relentlessly about it. In retrospect it was probably the best gift my father ever gave me and he never knew it, having died several years before. But where he died at 66, I'm 91 and still going pretty strong. I think there are two identifiable aspects to smoking. One is the nicotine addiction. The other is the relational habit. If you don't break both habits, the ceasing will be temporary. For me, the nicotine addiction was relatively easy. All I had to do is stop cold turkey for about 3 or 4 days and the physical desire reduced almost to zero. The other one was hard. Smoking usually becomes associative in one's life. For example, in my life I found that a cup of coffee without a cigarette, or finishing a meal without a cigarette had the strength of severe OCD. Then there was the popular cigarette after sex bit. Stress also brought out the urge. This was not the nicotine calling, it was the association of certain situations which had me reaching into my shirt pocket when I had already overcome the nicotine addiction. The life distorting evil is, where do you have to go to smoke. I estimate that I probably lost 25% of my productive time by smoking. Statistics show that smoking will take years off your life. But if you think of smoking as two habits, not one, you can overcome the recidivism. So it will be 46 years since I've stopped, half my life, and I firmly believe that it may be the reason I've survived this long. |
